There's something magical about gliding through the water under your own power, the paddle dipping rhythmically as you explore hidden corners of the harbor that boats can't reach. Kayaking in Orange County offers exactly this kind of intimate, immersive experience, and you don't need any prior experience to enjoy it.
Whether you're looking for a peaceful solo paddle, a fun date activity, or a family adventure the kids will love, kayaking is accessible, affordable, and surprisingly easy to learn. The calm, protected waters of Huntington Harbour make it an ideal spot for paddlers of all skill levels.
Why Kayaking is Perfect for Orange County
With over 300 days of sunshine per year and miles of calm harbor waterways, Orange County is practically made for kayaking. Here's why it's become one of the most popular water activities:
Perfect Weather
Mild temperatures year-round mean you can paddle any month. Even "winter" rarely drops below 60°F.
Calm Waters
Harbor paddling means no ocean swells. Flat, protected water that's perfect for beginners.
Wildlife Viewing
Get up close to sea lions, herons, pelicans, and fish. Kayaks are quiet and non-intrusive.
Great Exercise
Full-body workout that doesn't feel like exercise. Burns 300-500 calories per hour.
Photo Opportunities
See the harbor from a unique perspective. Gorgeous scenery at water level.
Family Friendly
Kids love it! Tandem kayaks let young ones paddle along safely with adults.
Single vs. Tandem Kayaks: Which Should You Choose?
We offer both single and tandem (double) kayaks. Here's how to decide:
Single Kayak
Perfect for solo adventurers who want, and speed.
Tandem Kayak
Great for couples, friends, or a parent with a child. More stable than singles and lets you share the experience side-by-side. The stronger paddler typically sits in back to steer. Fun for conversation and teamwork!
What You'll See While Paddling
Huntington Harbour isn't just about the paddling. It's about what you discover along the way. The calm waters are home to an amazing variety of wildlife:
Beyond wildlife, you'll paddle past beautiful waterfront homes, docked yachts, and scenic harbor views that most people never see. It's a completely different perspective on Orange County, and one you won't forget.
"We saw a sea lion lounging on a dock, herons fishing in the shallows, and fish jumping everywhere. My kids were mesmerized. They didn't want to leave!"

Is Kayaking Hard to Learn?
Not at all! Modern sit-on-top kayaks are incredibly stable and beginner-friendly. Unlike older-style kayaks where you sit inside (and can flip), sit-on-top kayaks have a wide, flat deck that makes tipping almost impossible on calm water.
The basic paddling technique takes about 5 minutes to learn:
- Hold the paddle correctly: Knuckles up, hands shoulder-width apart
- Dip one blade in the water near your feet
- Pull it back alongside the kayak
- Lift and repeat on the other side
- To turn: Paddle more on one side than the other
That's it! Within 10 minutes of getting on the water, you'll be paddling like you've done it for years. Our staff will give you a quick orientation covering technique, safety, and the best routes before you launch.
Best Times to Kayak
You can kayak year-round in Orange County, but some times are better than others:
- Morning (before 11am): Calmest water, best wildlife activity, fewer boats. Our favorite time to paddle.
- Late afternoon (4-6pm): Beautiful light, cooling temperatures, less crowded than midday.
- Weekdays: Fewer boats in the harbor means more peaceful paddling.
- Spring and Fall: Perfect temperatures, less crowded than summer.
- Summer: Warmest water if you plan to get wet. Book ahead. It's busy!
Avoid midday in summer (too hot) and windy days (harder paddling, choppy water). We'll let you know if conditions aren't ideal when you book.
Kayaking vs. Paddleboarding: Which is Better?
We get asked this a lot! Both are great. Here's how to decide:
- Choose kayaking if: You want, and those less comfortable with balance.
- Choose paddleboarding if: You want, anding, or prefer a more active experience. Better for warm days when getting wet sounds fun.
Not sure? Start with kayaking. It's easier for beginners and lets you focus on enjoying the scenery rather than staying balanced!
Perfect for Groups and Events
Kayaking is a fantastic group activity. We can accommodate:
- Corporate team building: Nothing bonds a team like paddling together
- Birthday parties: A unique celebration on the water
- Bachelor/bachelorette parties: Active fun before the big day
- Family reunions: All ages can participate
- Date days: Romantic and memorable
For groups of 4 or more, we recommend booking in advance to ensure we have enough kayaks available.
