Nothing beats a day on the water, except a day on the water with your best four-legged friend. If you've ever wished you could include your dog in your boating adventures, we've got great news: dogs are absolutely welcome on our boats, and Huntington Harbour is one of the most dog-friendly boating destinations in Southern California.
Most dogs love the experience. The cool ocean breeze, the new smells, the gentle rocking of the boat, and of course, being with their favorite humans. Whether you've got a water-loving Lab or a lap dog who just wants to snuggle while you cruise, there's room for your pup aboard.
"Our golden retriever had the time of his life! He sat at the front of the boat with his ears blowing in the wind the entire time. We've been back three times since."
Why Dogs Love Boating
Dogs are natural adventurers, and boating offers them a sensory experience unlike any other:
New Smells Everywhere
The harbor is full of fascinating scents, salt water, fish, other boats, wildlife. Your dog's nose will be in overdrive!
Cool Ocean Breeze
Even on warm days, the harbor breeze keeps things comfortable. Dogs often prefer boats to hot sidewalks.
Wildlife Watching
Sea lions, pelicans, fish jumping. There's always something to watch. Dogs love tracking the action.
Quality Time
No distractions, no rushing off. Just uninterrupted time with their favorite people.
Gentle Movement
The slow, steady motion of a Duffy boat is soothing. Many dogs actually fall asleep!
Instagram Gold
Let's be honest, dogs on boats are ridiculously photogenic. Get your camera ready.
Preparing Your Dog for Boating
A little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring both you and your pup have a great time:
Before Your Trip
- Test the waters: If your dog has never been on a boat, consider a shorter first trip (1-2 hours) to see how they handle it
- Exercise first: A tired dog is a calm dog. Take them for a walk or play session before boarding
- Skip the big meal: Feed them a few hours before, not right before. Some dogs get queasy (rare, but possible)
- Bathroom break: Make sure they've done their business before you board
- Get them comfortable with water: If your dog has never been around water, let them explore the dock area first
What to Bring for Your Dog

Dog Life Jackets: Do You Need One?
We strongly recommend a canine life jacket, even if your dog is a strong swimmer. Here's why:
- Unexpected situations: A sudden noise or wildlife sighting could cause your dog to jump
- Fatigue: Even good swimmers get tired, especially in unfamiliar water
- Easy retrieval: Life jackets have handles on top, making it easy to pull your dog back aboard
- Visibility: Bright colors help you spot your dog in the water
- Peace of mind: You'll relax more knowing they're protected
We don't provide pet life jackets, so please bring your own. They're available at pet stores, West Marine, and online retailers like Outward Hound and Ruffwear. Make sure it fits snugly. You should be able to fit two fingers under the straps.
Safety Tips for Boating with Dogs

- Watch for overheating â Provide shade, take breaks, and watch for excessive panting
- Non-slip surface, them on stable footing
- Secure when docking â Use a leash when approaching docks or other boats
- Know the signs of anxiety â Excessive drooling, panting, pacing, or whining
- Create a safe spot â Give them a designated area where they can relax
- Never leave them alone â Dogs should always be supervised on boats
Best Spots to Explore with Your Dog
Huntington Harbour is ideal for dog-friendly boating because of its calm, protected waters and numerous places to stop:
- Main harbor channels: Wide, calm waters perfect for a relaxing cruise
- Public docks: Several spots around the harbor where you can tie up for a potty break
- Dog-friendly restaurants: Some waterfront spots welcome well-behaved pups on their patios
- Quiet coves: Peaceful corners of the harbor away from boat traffic
- Sunset Beach: Nearby dog-friendly beach for post-cruise exploring
The maximum speed on our Duffy boats is 5 mph, basically a walking pace, which makes for a calm, comfortable ride that even nervous dogs can handle.
What If My Dog Gets Anxious?
Most dogs adapt quickly, but some need a little extra help:
- Start slow: Let them explore the stationary boat before departing
- Stay calm: Dogs pick up on your energy. If you're relaxed, they will be too
- Bring familiar items: Their favorite blanket, toy, or treat
- Take breaks: Pull up to a dock if they seem stressed
- Keep it short: A shorter first trip helps build positive associations
- Positive reinforcement: Treats and praise when they're calm
If your dog seems genuinely distressed, it's okay to cut the trip short. Some dogs simply aren't boat dogs, and that's fine. But most warm up quickly once they realize boating means adventure with their favorite people!
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an extra fee for bringing my dog?
Nope! Dogs ride free. We just ask that you bring a blanket for them to lay on and clean up after them.
Are all dogs allowed?
All well-behaved dogs of any size are welcome. We've had everything from Chihuahuas to Great Danes!
What if my dog needs a bathroom break?
There are public docks throughout the harbor where you can tie up briefly for potty breaks. We'll show you where they are.
Can my dog swim off the boat?
While the harbor is safe, we don't recommend letting dogs swim. The water can be cold and there's boat traffic to consider. Life jackets are essential if there's any chance of your dog going overboard.
What about cats or other pets?
We welcome all "reasonable" pets! Cats, rabbits, and other calm animals are fine. Just make sure they're comfortable and secure.
Do you provide dog life jackets?
No, please bring your own. They're affordable and worth the investment for safety.
