We get it, renting a boat for the first time can feel intimidating. Can I really drive this thing? What if I crash? What if I get lost? What do I even bring?

Here's the truth: our boats are easier to operate than a golf cart. Seriously. If you can drive a car, you can drive a Duffy boat. We've had hundreds of first-time boaters cruise out of our dock and come back grinning, wondering why they waited so long to try it.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know so you can skip the nerves and get straight to the fun.

"I was so nervous! But within 5 minutes of leaving the dock, I felt like a natural. Honestly, it's the easiest thing I've ever done. Now we rent boats all the time."

- Sarah M., first-time boater from Irvine

Why Duffy Boats Are Perfect for Beginners

🐢
Slow & Steady

Top speed is only 5-6 mph. You're cruising, not racing. Plenty of time to react to everything.

🔇
Whisper Quiet

Electric motor means no loud engine. You can hear yourself think and have conversations easily.

🎮
Simple Controls

Steering wheel + throttle. That's it. Forward, reverse, and stop. No complicated systems.

⚓
Super Stable

Flat-bottom design means very little rocking. Even people prone to seasickness feel comfortable.

🏠
Protected Waters

You're cruising in a calm harbor, not the open ocean. No waves, no swells, just smooth sailing.

📍
Hard to Get Lost

The harbor has clear boundaries. Landmarks everywhere. We'll show you the route before you leave.

How to Drive the Boat (It's Easy!)

Operating a Duffy boat is genuinely simple. Here's the basics:

The Controls

  • Steering wheel: Works just like a car. Turn left to go left, right to go right.
  • Throttle: Push forward to go forward, pull back for reverse, center is neutral.
  • Speed control: The further you push the throttle, the faster you go (max 5-6 mph).

Tips for Success

  • Start slow. There's no rush. Get comfortable at a crawling pace first.
  • Look where you're going. Keep your eyes forward, not on your feet.
  • Give yourself space. Boats don't stop instantly, so always leave room ahead.
  • Use reverse to stop. If you need to stop quickly, shift to reverse briefly.
  • Turn wide. Boats turn differently than cars. Make bigger turns than you think.
  • Approach docks slowly. Super slow. Slower than that. Even slower.
⚓ Captain's Tip: When docking, approach at an angle, not straight on. Come in slowly, shift to neutral, then use small bursts of reverse to stop. We'll show you exactly how before you leave!

Common First-Timer Questions

Do I need a boating license?

Nope! In California, no license is required to rent a boat. You just need to be 18+ and we'll train you before you leave the dock.

What if I can't figure out the controls?

We won't let you leave until you feel comfortable! Our team will spend as much time as you need going over everything. And you can always call us if you have questions while on the water.

Can I really not crash into something?

At 5 mph with a wide-open harbor, crashes are extremely rare. If you're ever uncomfortable, just slow down or stop. The boat responds immediately.

What if I get seasick?

Duffy boats are very stable on the calm harbor waters. Most people who get seasick on ocean boats feel perfectly fine on our boats. There's no rocking or swaying.

Can I bring my kids?

Absolutely! There's no age minimum for passengers. Kids love it! Life jackets are provided for all sizes. Just keep little ones seated while moving.

What if I need to use the bathroom?

Plan a bathroom break before you board. During your cruise, you can dock at certain restaurants with restroom access. We'll tell you where.

What if something goes wrong?

You'll have our phone number. If anything happens, engine issue, you get lost, anything. Just call us. We're here to help. Truly, problems are rare.

How far can I go?

You'll cruise within Huntington Harbour, plenty to explore! We'll show you the boundaries and give you a suggested route. It's hard to get lost.

Safety Tips for New Boaters

Stay Safe on the Water

  • Life jackets: Kids under 13 must wear them. Adults should know where they're stored.
  • Stay seated while moving: Don't let passengers walk around when the boat is in motion.
  • No standing on the bow: Stay inside the boat, not on the front edge.
  • Watch your wake: Stay slow near docks, other boats, and swimmers.
  • Keep hands inside: Don't drag hands in the water near docks or other boats.
  • Designate a lookout: Have someone watch for obstacles, especially when docking.
  • No glass: Plastic and cans only. Broken glass on a boat is dangerous.
  • Drink responsibly: The captain should stay sober. Tipsy driving is still impaired driving!

What You'll See on the Water

First-time boaters are often surprised by how much there is to see in the harbor:

  • Stunning waterfront homes: Multi-million dollar estates with private docks
  • Other boats: Yachts, sailboats, kayaks, paddleboarders
  • Wildlife: Pelicans, herons, sea lions, sometimes dolphins!
  • Islands to explore: Cruise around Trinidad Island and other landmarks
  • Waterfront restaurants: Many let you dock and dine!
  • Beautiful sunsets: The harbor is magical at golden hour

First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid

Learn from others! Here's what NOT to do:

  • Don't rush off the dock. Take your time. There's no prize for fastest departure.
  • Don't forget sunscreen. You'll be on the water longer than you think, and the reflection intensifies the sun.
  • Don't overpack. You don't need as much as you think. Keep it simple.
  • Don't drink too much too fast. Sun + water + alcohol = a bad combination.
  • Don't approach docks at full speed. Slow, slow, SLOW. Then slower.
  • Don't panic. If something feels off, just stop the boat (neutral position) and assess.

You've Got This!

Thousands of first-time boaters have rented from us, and every single one has come back safely with a smile on their face, the way.

Your only regret will be not doing it sooner.

So grab some snacks, round up your friends or family, and come see what all the fuss is about. The harbor is waiting! ⛵
